Vietnam targets wider 5G use in 2027–2030 as it prepares for 6G
Telecoms officials identify factory networks, port connectivity and agricultural applications as ways to generate more value from 5G.

Vietnam plans to put 5G to greater use across manufacturing, smart cities, transport, agriculture, healthcare and education during 2027–2030, according to its Authority of Telecommunications. The authority outlined the priorities at an ASEAN conference in Quang Ninh province on October 29.
The authority described Vietnam’s rollout as having reached a large-scale deployment stage after trials. It highlighted private networks serving factories, connectivity for ports and smart border crossings, and applications for agricultural production.
Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Pham Duc Long told the gathering that investment in coverage and network quality was not enough by itself. He said 5G needed to deliver productivity gains, better services and new ways of organising production and business. Operators should help build solutions for customers, while regulators should support experimentation, he said.
Long also urged the sector to get ready for 5G-Advanced and 6G through research, skills development, trials, spectrum preparation and work on international standards. He said Vietnam was ready to cooperate with ASEAN members, Japan and other partners.
The GSMA recommended market-specific policies across ASEAN, including public spectrum roadmaps, simpler base-station deployment procedures and greater infrastructure sharing. It also called for governments, mobile operators and banks to cooperate on verification tools based on mobile data. A survey it cited found that 96 per cent of users polled in six ASEAN markets were concerned about online fraud.
