ASEAN and Japan should work more closely on cybersecurity as artificial intelligence creates new risks, Indonesia’s National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) chief Nugroho Sulistyo Budi told a conference in Bangkok on 29 October.

Addressing the third ASEAN-Japan Cybersecurity Community Alliance (AJCCA) Conference, Budi drew attention to Agentic AI: autonomous systems able to plan, take decisions and perform tasks independently. He said advanced AI offered technological opportunities while also creating cybersecurity challenges.

In a statement, Budi said AI could help defend against cyber threats, but could also itself be attacked or used to launch attacks. Indonesia urged regional partners to strengthen AI governance, embed security in system architecture and manage risks proactively.

Budi set out a cooperation framework based on collaboration, capacity and connectivity. He said these priorities would support information sharing, develop regional capabilities and improve coordination in responding to threats that cross national borders.

The annual conference gathers cybersecurity agencies, ministries, industry associations, academics and practitioners from ASEAN countries and Japan. Budi also received the alliance’s ACRA Award for Outstanding Leadership, recognising his cybersecurity initiatives and work to strengthen national and regional cybersecurity ecosystems.
