Malaysia’s East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) began trial operations on Nov 7 as it prepares for commercial passenger services targeted to start on Dec 12, Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) said.

The first trial train left Terminal Bersepadu Gombak at 7am and reached KotaSAS station in Kuantan, Pahang, at 8.28am. It carried 170 passengers, completing the journey in 88 minutes and reaching a maximum speed of 160 km/h.

MRL said the programme would test readiness, service efficiency, station management and passengers’ experience under operating conditions. Until Dec 2, trains will run in both directions between Gombak and Kota Baru, offering express and transit services.

The electric multiple-unit trains will follow the timetable planned for commercial passenger operations. The trials also include boarding passes and cabin crew services.

The programme is being conducted by ECRL Operation Sdn Bhd, the network’s operator and maintenance provider. It is a 50:50 joint venture between MRL and China Communications Construction Sdn Bhd.

The trials follow earlier testing and commissioning work, including the System Integration Test and completion of the Fault-Free Run on Oct 29. Construction of Phase 1, covering the Kota Baru–Gombak route, stood at 98.47 per cent in October.
