Vingroup orders €800 million in Alstom trains for Hanoi metro expansion
The initial order forms part of a 200-train agreement for five new lines, with 117 trains to be assembled in Vietnam.

Vingroup has ordered an initial batch of metro trains from France’s Alstom for €800 million (US$900 million), as Hanoi develops five additional metro lines. Alstom said the order covers its Metropolis trains but did not specify how many.
The purchase falls under an agreement signed on Oct. 6 for 200 trains. That contract’s value was not disclosed. Production will be split between France, where 83 trains will be built, and Vietnam, where Vingroup will assemble the other 117. The initial batch will be manufactured in Valenciennes, France.
Vinhomes, a Vingroup subsidiary, is building the five routes, which together will span 303.5 kilometres. Work started in June, with completion expected in 2030. Hanoi currently has two metro lines.
The expansion will connect central Hanoi with Noi Bai International Airport and improve links to northern and southern areas of the city, as well as Hoa Lac, a high-tech hub to the west.
Each train will have five aluminium-alloy carriages and use GoA4 automation, enabling operation without an onboard driver. Alstom has previously supplied 10 trains for Hanoi’s metro line 3.
