Sembcorp Utilities has announced separate nuclear-sector cooperation agreements with ST Engineering of Singapore and Canada’s AtkinsRealis. The Sembcorp Industries subsidiary, which is wholly owned, will share expertise with the partners and assess opportunities to work together.

The memorandum with AtkinsRealis provides for exchanges about nuclear technology, including questions of regulation, technical requirements and safety. Cooperation with ST Engineering will encompass workforce training, supply-chain knowledge and practices used internationally in the industry.

Speaking on Oct 27, Sembcorp chief operating officer Charles Koh described nuclear energy as one option countries were examining for their long-term energy supply. He said the partnerships would build Sembcorp’s capabilities and understanding of possible applications as it positioned its energy business for future opportunities.

AtkinsRealis nuclear president Joe St Julian said the company wanted to investigate with Sembcorp how nuclear energy could help meet future demand. He cited its experience of more than six decades and its role as original equipment manufacturer for the Canada Deuterium Uranium reactor.

ST Engineering’s group chief technology and digital officer, Lee Shiang Long, said its work on tungsten coatings for fusion reactors and research into advanced reactor materials could support exploration of uses for its engineering, cybersecurity and command-and-control capabilities.
