Pertamina Patra Niaga said its Green Refinery Cilacap had reached commercial production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), producing about 11 million litres of co-processed SAF in October. Used cooking oil is among the feedstocks, according to Taufik Aditiyawarman, the company’s deputy president director I.

Vice-President Gibran Rakabuming Raka inspected the conversion process during a visit on 26 October. He said SAF development should involve local communities so that cooking oil collected by women through waste banks could generate income and supply national industry.

Taufik said production uses the refinery’s Thermal Distillate Hydro Treating (TDHT) facility to process used cooking oil together with other feedstocks. The used-oil share is capped at about 5 per cent of the TDHT unit’s total production capacity.

The company supports three waste banks near the Cilacap refinery. Their annual collection volumes are 984 litres for Bank Sampah Abhipraya, 2,283 litres for Bank Sampah Beo Asri and 717 litres for Bank Sampah Cahaya Asri. Participants receive money in exchange for the oil.

Collection boxes are also available at Pasar Amarta Kutawaru and selected petrol stations across Indonesia, the company said. Oil deposited through collection boxes or waste banks can be exchanged for cash or e-wallet credit.

Pertamina Patra Niaga said its SAF had been marketed to several domestic and international airlines. It also reported having tested used cooking oil as one of the feedstocks for Green Gasoline.
