An international technology company is planning an artificial intelligence data centre in Tanjung Embang, Sarawak, as part of a US$50 billion investment announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, according to Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking to reporters in Kuching on October 26 after opening the Sarawak Urban Forum (SUF) 2.0, Abang Johari confirmed the proposal but stressed that planning was still under way. He declined to identify the company or disclose the amount involved, citing confidentiality surrounding the corporate transaction.

The wider US$50 billion AI investment covers both Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, according to earlier media reports of Anwar’s announcement. No separate amount was disclosed for the proposed data centre.

Abang Johari also said Anwar had contacted him about the investor’s move into Sarawak. He attributed the company’s choice of Kuching to the state’s economic transition and workforce preparation, including its provision of free education.
