Singapore-China maritime pact expands green fuel and smart-ship research
The renewed cooperation also covers workforce training, while China Classification Society aims to develop its maritime technology operations in Singapore.

Cooperation between the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and China Classification Society will broaden to cover green-fuel supply chains, vessel electrification and autonomous shipping under a renewed memorandum of understanding. The renewal occurred at the Sixth North Bund International Shipping Forum in Shanghai.
The organisations will widen their research and development work to include technologies for improving vessel energy efficiency. Their digital and smart-ship collaboration will also encompass testing using digital technology and assessing risks for autonomous vessels.
MPA Chief Executive Ang Wee Keong said the collaboration would contribute to solutions for maritime decarbonisation and digitalisation and help build the industry's workforce.
Students and those seeking maritime careers will gain exposure to international companies and industry practices through training initiatives. These include industry attachments, internships, the MaritimeONE Scholarship Program and the MPA Global Internship Awards.
China Classification Society Chairman and President Zhao Yan said it was increasing its presence in Singapore. The organisation wants Singapore to become its most comprehensive maritime technology centre overseas and an integrated platform offering one-stop services.
The two organisations began their partnership in 2023. Work with research and industry partners in Singapore has covered B100 biofuel for harbour craft, as well as evaluating, testing and verifying smart ships.
