A training programme for 250 multimedia teachers in Timor-Leste aims to build their ability to use artificial intelligence and digital technology in teaching. The Education Ministry is organising the training with South Korea’s government through the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training (KRIVET) and the EAS TVET Cooperation Network.

At the opening of an international AI seminar in Dili on 28 October 2026, Domingos Lopes Lemos, Secretary of State for General Secondary and Technical-Vocational Education, said the teachers could bring the knowledge and skills they gained to schools throughout Timor-Leste. He urged participants to exchange experiences with South Korean specialists.

Lemos also outlined ministry plans for an AI and digital education centre in Bekora, intended to serve as a national resource for developing digital skills among teachers and students. Timor-Leste’s delegation proposed the centre during his September 2026 visit to South Korea, where he held discussions with its Education Ministry and KRIVET.

The network’s secretary-general, Young Saing Kim, said the programme would introduce AI concepts, functions and applications in technical-vocational education. Teachers needed to learn about its benefits and risks before attempting more advanced uses, he said, adding that adoption should proceed in line with Timor-Leste’s knowledge and capacity.

Fernando Xavier, a multimedia teacher at Bekora’s Escola Sekundária Jerál 12 Novembru, described the training as a continuation of the previous year’s programme. He advocated clear rules for AI and mobile phone use by students. Although he permits both when coursework requires them, he cautioned that overdependence on AI could reduce students’ effort and capacity for learning and critical thinking.
