Sarawak sets 15,000 MW generation target for 2035
Renewables are intended to supply at least 60 per cent of capacity, while three power projects totalling 3,285 MW are being implemented.

Sarawak is targeting 15,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity generation capacity by 2035, with renewables accounting for at least 60 per cent, state Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said on October 19.
Addressing the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly during his ministry’s winding-up debate, Julaihi said three projects under implementation would contribute a combined 3,285 MW. They comprise the Baleh hydroelectric project, Samalaju Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) and Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT).
Baleh’s 1,285 MW plant is expected to begin operating during the fourth quarter of 2029. At the 1,500 MW Samalaju CCPP, Blocks 1 and 2, together providing 1,000 MW, are expected to enter operation during the second quarter of 2027. The 500 MW Block 3 is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.
Julaihi put physical progress at the 500 MW Miri CCGT at 63 per cent, with operations expected during the fourth quarter of 2027. He also said Sarawak was developing the Borneo Power Grid and Asean Power Grid.
Sarawak currently supplies West Kalimantan with an average of 100 MW and Sabah with 30 MW, according to Julaihi. Planned exports include at least 30 MW to Brunei, no more than 1,000 MW to Singapore and at least 1,000 MW to Peninsular Malaysia.
The Brunei connection remains subject to negotiations and feasibility studies. Work on the Singapore link is at the submarine cable survey study stage, while discussions concerning Peninsular Malaysia are preliminary, he said.
