Building work on Penang’s Mutiara Line LRT connection from Macallum to Penang Sentral is due to start in the third quarter of 2027, according to Zairil Khir Johari, chairman of the state’s Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee.

In his November 4 written reply to the State Assembly, Zairil said implementing agency MRT Corp was assessing tenders, with evaluation expected to finish in November 2026. After a main contractor is appointed, initial works will precede the major construction phase, including the sea crossing.

The confirmed route provides for a 5.5-kilometre bridge over the Penang Strait. Its two main stations will be Macallum, on Penang Island, and Penang Sentral, in Seberang Perai. Bagan Luar is designated a provisional station for a possible later extension.

Zairil put the connection’s completion target at December 2031, matching that of the Silicon Island–Komtar section. The full Mutiara Line will extend approximately 29.67 km, comprising 20 stations and two additional provisional stations. Passenger operations are expected to begin in December 2031.
