Malaysia approves rail extension towards Thai border
The route will connect Kota Bharu with Rantau Panjang, opposite Sungai Kolok in Thailand’s Narathiwat province.

Malaysia has given approval for its East Coast rail line to be extended from Kota Bharu, Kelantan, to Rantau Panjang on the border with Thailand, Bernama reported, citing Kelantan Chief Minister Mohd Nassuruddin Daud.
Rantau Panjang lies across the border from Sungai Kolok district in Thailand’s Narathiwat province. The rail extension was one of several projects for Kelantan endorsed by the Malaysian government, according to Bernama.
Construction is already under way on Malaysia’s East Coast Rail Link, which connects the western port of Port Klang with Kota Bharu. The project is intended to support trade, investment and tourism on the east coast.
The Malaysian government also plans to move more of the country’s goods to China using rail routes through Thailand and Laos.
