Putrajaya will spend RM55 million on covered walkways in Kuala Lumpur, with completion expected in the third quarter of 2027, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh told Parliament on November 2.

Yeoh said construction would start in January 2027. The programme will provide 22 kilometres of walkways through Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) operating expenditure, allocating two kilometres to each parliamentary constituency. No pedestrian walkways were under construction at the time, she said.

The planned routes will connect residential neighbourhoods with commercial areas, public facilities, bus stops, clinics and places of worship. Yeoh said the aim was to encourage people to walk or take public transport rather than drive.

A further 20 kilometres of sheltered pedestrian routes will be built by DBKL in the city centre, Yeoh added. Those links will run between public transport facilities and destinations including shopping areas, office complexes, the Botanical Garden and Titiwangsa Lake Garden.

Earlier walkway projects carried out from 2023 covered 29 locations and a combined length of 4.35 kilometres, according to Yeoh.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the project while tabling Budget 2027. The budget includes a dedicated allocation for DBKL’s urban infrastructure improvements under a wider RM400 million package for green spaces, parks and upgrades to public facilities.
