Indonesia urges Toyota to produce fully electric vehicles locally
Toyota is preparing additional battery-electric models for Indonesia but has not disclosed their specifications, market segments or prices.

Indonesia has asked Toyota to move beyond its existing hybrid production and manufacture battery-electric vehicles domestically. Industry Minister M Sarmuji made the request during an October 27, 2026 meeting with PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia president director Nandi Julyanto in Jakarta.
Sarmuji said the development of Indonesia’s battery ecosystem offered Toyota an opportunity to increase its involvement in fully electric vehicle production. The government also wants the Japanese manufacturer to expand its export markets.
Nandi said Toyota was preparing further battery-electric models suited to Indonesian consumers and market conditions. He left open the possibility of more affordable options, but the company did not identify the segments, specifications or price ranges of the vehicles being prepared.
Toyota already sells the fully electric bZ4X in Indonesia. Its October 2026 Jakarta on-the-road price list puts the bZ4X Standard at a starting price of Rp799 million, while the all-wheel-drive bZ4X Touring starts at Rp889 million.
The company also offers the Urban Cruiser for Rp759 million to Rp763 million, although that model is imported fully assembled from India. Nandi said consumer needs would continue to guide Toyota’s product choices for Indonesia.
