ASEAN power links need investment readiness and viable pricing, TNB says
The utility is advancing initiatives involving Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia as ASEAN works towards an integrated electricity grid by 2045.

Regional electricity connections require firm project objectives and readiness for investment to make use of ASEAN’s renewable energy potential, according to Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB). The Malaysian utility said commercial viability would also be essential.
At Singapore International Energy Week 2026, TNB chief grid officer Datuk Ir. Hasmarizal Hassan said interconnection projects need detailed feasibility assessments, suitable technology, buyers committed to purchasing electricity and clearly established stages for investment decisions.
Hasmarizal said risks should be dealt with progressively ahead of final investment decisions. He added that competitive electricity costs were important both for a project’s commercial prospects and for obtaining financing.
TNB is progressing initiatives involving Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia, alongside Malaysia’s existing electricity connections with Thailand and Singapore. The efforts aim to bolster regional energy security and enable trade in renewable electricity.
The projects support the ASEAN Power Grid, which seeks to link member states’ electricity networks. ASEAN aims to achieve full grid integration by 2045, with substantial investment expected in transmission systems, national grid improvements and undersea electricity cables.
Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap ambitions and increasing power demand, notably from data centres, are adding to the need for renewable energy integration and stronger connections across the region.
