Social media platforms in Thailand will have to confirm advertisers’ identities before publishing their ads from early November, under new requirements aimed at curbing online scams. The government is working with Meta to prepare advertisers for the change.

The Electronic Transactions Commission (ETC) notification appeared in the Royal Gazette in May. It requires checks using documents and facial comparison, or a digital identity verification system with a high level of reliability. Platforms must keep advertisers’ information for a minimum of 90 days after their ads finish running.

Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaichanok Chidchob has asked Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, to help prevent fraudsters from using paid advertising to target the public. Meta has urged advertisers seeking to run ads in Thailand to finish verification by early November.

Meta will coordinate with the ministry and the Electronic Transactions Development Agency to explain the rules and help advertisers get ready, focusing particularly on small businesses. The ministry wants those businesses to meet the verification deadline without unnecessary disruption to legitimate commercial activity on digital platforms.
