Peninsular Malaysia data centres forecast to need 8.39GW by 2030
Johor is expected to account for 4.42GW of peak electricity demand, followed by Selangor at 1.48GW, according to the energy ministry.

Data centres in Peninsular Malaysia are forecast to require 8.39 gigawatts (GW) of electricity at peak demand by 2030, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra) said. The projection reflects current estimates used in electricity supply planning.
Johor's projected requirement is the largest at 4.42GW, while Selangor is expected to need 1.48GW. Petra said the two states were key locations for data centre development, requiring electricity infrastructure planning that accounts for expected demand growth.
By August 2026, Peninsular Malaysia had 45 completed, operating data centres, the ministry said. Their combined electricity supply capacity stood at 6.04GW, referring to power supplied through the National Grid by Tenaga Nasional Bhd to support their operations.
For water, Petra forecast that data centres across Johor and Selangor would require 389.04 million litres per day (MLD) by 2030. It put actual current consumption reported to the National Water Services Commission at 63.90 MLD.
The figures were provided in response to a question from Onn Abu Bakar (PH-Batu Pahat) about electricity and water requirements through 2030 and the number of completed data centres.
