Jakarta MRT says archaeological finds will not delay Phase 2A
Construction reached 65.1 per cent completion by late September 2026, with the Bundaran HI–Kota expansion scheduled to finish in 2029.

PT MRT Jakarta says its Phase 2A underground expansion remains on schedule despite the discovery of more than 4,000 historical artifacts. The operator said recovery work and changes to engineering designs had already been factored into the construction timetable.
The US$1.6 billion (Rp25.3 trillion) project will link Bundaran HI with Kota, using funding from a joint Indonesian-Japanese loan. Construction was 65.1 per cent complete as of late September 2026, ahead of initial targets, and completion is scheduled for 2029.
Project construction manager Indra Gunawan said artifact handovers were being coordinated with the progression of site work. Lead archaeologist Junus Satria Atmodjo said the discovery of lower structural remains of Batavia Fort had prompted MRT Jakarta to revise its design, a change he described as costly and difficult.
Excavations have uncovered terracotta water channels, wooden piles linked to river walls and ceramic fragments from Japan, China, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia. Archaeologists said the objects offer physical evidence of Indonesia's longstanding links with international maritime trade.
MRT Jakarta has coordinated with the Jakarta Culture Agency on preservation using 3D scanning and photogrammetry. Selected objects have been transferred to city authorities and will undergo curation before display in a public gallery planned within Jakarta Kota Station.
