Indonesia plans an additional 70 gigawatts (GW) of electricity capacity to help meet demand driven by artificial intelligence and data centres, according to Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto. The expansion falls under PLN’s electricity supply plan covering 2025-2034.

Speaking at the Artificial Intelligence Impact Summit 2026, Airlangga identified secure energy supplies and improved digital infrastructure as priorities for Indonesia’s pursuit of AI sovereignty. The government is also advancing a solar programme with capacity of 100 gigawatt-peak (GWp). Indonesia currently has approximately 0.45 to 0.58 GW of data centre capacity.

Workforce development is another part of the effort. Airlangga said the government’s goal is to develop 9 million digital talents by 2030, supported by the Digital Talent Scholarship and a vocational training super tax deduction of up to 200 per cent.

A partnership involving Danantara and Arm will provide training for 15,000 semiconductor chip design engineers over three years. Planned uses of AI span manufacturing, supply chains, logistics, taxation and healthcare, alongside business licensing via the Online Single Submission system.

Airlangga pointed to Indonesia’s 229 million internet users and 22 million digitally connected micro, small and medium enterprises as a foundation for its digital economy. He said AI governance should emphasise safety, accountability, protection of the public and regulatory certainty.
