Indonesia has prepared a roadmap for cutting greenhouse gas emissions throughout its transport sector under a partnership with the United Kingdom, according to the Transportation Ministry. The document sets out planned measures and is intended to guide ministry policies and emissions-reduction programmes.

Transportation Ministry Secretary-General Arif Toha said the work involved World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia and other consortium partners under the United Kingdom Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UK PACT) programme. It draws on an emissions inventory and assessments of individual transport subsectors.

The ministry aims to move more passengers from private vehicles onto buses and trains, and shift freight to rail. Its plans also include better road traffic management and broader railway electrification, Toha said.

For shipping, the proposed measures focus on modernising vessels and making operations more efficient. Aviation measures include upgrading technology, improving flight efficiency and using sustainable aviation fuel.

Toha said implementation would require coordination across transport subsectors and ongoing monitoring and evaluation. Indonesia expects the roadmap, supported by emissions inventories and monitoring, reporting and verification systems, to help the sector contribute towards the national goal of net-zero emissions by 2060.

The partnership has also produced emissions-calculation guidelines. Work is underway on supporting tools and equipment for planning and implementing decarbonisation measures, he added.
