Indonesia intends to collaborate with US companies to develop hydrogen energy, Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot said in Jakarta. The proposed partnerships would bring together American clean-energy technology and Indonesia’s domestic resources.

Yuliot said there were indications of substantial hydrogen reserves in Indonesia, although they remained untapped. The energy ministry has identified 93 initiatives for hydrogen infrastructure, with investment valued at Rp32 trillion.

The initiatives aim to make use of excess production. According to state electricity company PT PLN, Indonesia’s annual hydrogen output is 200 tons, while consumption amounts to 75 tons, resulting in a surplus of 125 tons.

A pilot on Rengit Island, developed jointly with PLN, combines solar generation and hydrogen storage to replace diesel generators. Eniya Listiani Dewi, the ministry’s renewable energy director-general, said the initiatives follow Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia’s mandate to move remote areas away from diesel generation.

Eniya said greater hydrogen use could lift the national energy resilience score to 8 out of 10, from 7. She said reaching that goal would need cooperation between public authorities, state enterprises, businesses, academic institutions and overseas partners.
