Singapore intends to make broader use of artificial intelligence a priority when it chairs ASEAN in 2027, according to DBS’ Intentional AI report. The effort would support adoption by governments, workers and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises across the region.

DBS said the proposed assistance includes shared language models, tools for AI governance and capability-building programmes. It suggested that the chairmanship could address compatible rules, data moving across borders, common evaluation methods and affordable deployment support for smaller businesses and public institutions with limited capacity.

The report put the region’s digital economy at more than US$300 billion in 2025. It also said data centre capacity is expected to increase to more than three times its size between 2025 and 2030.

At the Grand Finale Dinner of the 24th Forbes Global CEO Conference, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong called for closer regional connections in areas including investment, trade, payments, digital systems, power grids and transport. He said Singapore would strengthen established partnerships and develop ties with new regions as global trade fragments.

Wong also said AI would eliminate some jobs and alter others, while its overall employment impact remains uncertain. He described Singapore’s approach as supporting workers through cooperation among unions, employers and the government, alongside efforts to transform businesses.

Companies obtaining government grants for information technology and enterprise transformation are expected to support employees in acquiring new skills. Wong said retrenchment should be a last resort, with affected workers treated fairly through measures including advance notice and retrenchment benefits.
