KAI asked to draw up rail masterplan as Jabodetabek ridership grows
KAI projects 375 million KRL passengers in 2026, above its initial target of 369 million, with annual demand nearing 600 million by 2036.

BP BUMN and Danantara have asked PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), or KAI, to prepare a railway transformation masterplan focused on expanding capacity and improving services, particularly on the Jabodetabek KRL network.
Dony Oskaria, head of BP BUMN and chief operating officer of Danantara, called for the plan during a meeting with KAI president director Bobby Rasyidin at Wisma Danantara in Jakarta. His remarks were carried on BP BUMN’s official Instagram account and cited on 15 October 2026.
KAI forecasts 375 million Jabodetabek KRL passengers in 2026, compared with an initial target of 369 million. Ridership had reached 271 million through September 2026. Its longer-term projection puts annual passenger volume at nearly 600 million in 2036.
To accommodate that growth, KAI is preparing to shorten intervals between services and increase train capacity. On the Green Line towards Serpong and Rangkasbitung, it aims to run SF-12 trains at intervals of under 10 minutes. Capacity upgrades using SF-12 trains on the Cikarang and Bogor lines are targeted to be ready in 2028-2029.
The masterplan will also address fleet requirements, station and platform capacity, communications systems and the busiest sections of the rail network. Dony said the roadmap should guide long-term infrastructure and service development as passenger numbers rise.
