Indonesia’s government and the UNFCCC Secretariat are seeking closer Asia-Pacific cooperation on managing forests and financing climate action through REDD+. Their collaboration includes a regional forum taking place in Bali from October 12 to 15, 2026.

Haruni Krisnawati, Senior Advisor to the Minister of Forestry on Climate Change, said REDD+ supports both international climate governance and Indonesia’s forest management. The initiative’s full name is Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation.

Haruni said the gathering allows forestry practitioners, experts and government representatives to compare practical experience, assess progress and develop approaches to reducing forest loss and degradation. She also highlighted opportunities for participants to build professional connections and explore further cooperation.

Dirk Nemitz, who leads the UNFCCC Secretariat’s Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use team, said the forum aims to share technical knowledge on implementing REDD+. It also addresses more complex financing and governance arrangements following implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. He said active involvement by participants would be essential to achieving lasting results and practical implementation.

Discussions cover a review spanning 10 years of REDD+ implementation, alignment between reporting and results-based finance, safeguards, and cooperation among the Rio Conventions. Participants will also visit Bali’s Mangrove Arboretum, Mangrove Information Center and Wantilan Mangrove Nursery to examine coastal ecosystem restoration practices.
