Danantara to review proposal for 23 used Japanese train sets
KAI has obtained parliamentary commission approval for the imports, intended to meet growing commuter rail demand in Jakarta and nearby areas.

Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund Danantara plans to discuss KAI’s proposed purchase of 23 second-hand Japanese train sets with Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi. Chief Operating Officer Dony Oskaria said in Jakarta that he was scheduled to meet the minister, but did not indicate whether the fund would back the imports.
The proposal is aimed at meeting increased demand for electric commuter trains serving Jakarta and neighbouring areas. It covers seven sets with 12 cars each and 16 sets with eight cars each. Bobby Rasyidin, president director of state railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia, obtained approval for the plan from House of Representatives Commission VI during a hearing.
Oskaria said a decision would require a thorough evaluation of the costs, benefits and value the proposal could deliver. He would discuss those considerations with Purwagandhi first.
He also said the government remained open to buying rolling stock from state-owned manufacturer PT INKA, with demand potentially aligned to its production capacity.
