BYD has chosen Inokom Corporation Sdn Bhd to assemble vehicles in Malaysia, formalising the partnership with a memorandum of understanding signed at its Shenzhen headquarters in China. The Kulim, Kedah-based company is a subsidiary of Sime Motors.

The agreement gives BYD a local partner after it dropped a proposal to build a completely knocked-down (CKD) facility in Tanjung Malim, Perak. That plant had been proposed in 2025. When cancelling it, BYD said its Malaysian assembly plans would instead involve a local partner.

BYD Malaysia managing director Jacob Ma described domestic assembly as an important element of the automaker’s long-term commitment to Malaysia. He also outlined plans to bring BYD’s new energy vehicle expertise and battery technologies closer to the Malaysian market.

Sime group chief executive officer Dato’ Jeffri Salim Davidson said the collaboration could support local businesses and build capabilities for the automotive industry’s long-term growth. BYD has not disclosed the assembly programme’s details and said it would provide more information later.
